Canvas GPA Calculator: Weighted, Cumulative, and Semester GPA Explained
"Canvas GPA calculator" gets searched constantly, but Canvas itself doesn't have one built in. Here's the actual math it's replacing: how a weighted course grade gets calculated, how dropped scores factor in, and how a percentage becomes a GPA point value.
Weighted grades: how assignment groups work
Most college courses don't average every assignment equally. Instead, the syllabus groups assignments (Homework, Quizzes, Exams, Participation) and assigns each group a percentage weight that adds up to 100%. Your course grade is the sum of each group's average, multiplied by its weight, not a simple average of every individual score.
Homework 20%, Quizzes 25%, Midterm 25%, Final 30%. If your averages in each group are 92%, 85%, 78%, and 88%:
(0.92 × 0.20) + (0.85 × 0.25) + (0.78 × 0.25) + (0.88 × 0.30) = 0.184 + 0.2125 + 0.195 + 0.264 = 85.55%
Unweighted courses skip this step and just average total points earned over total points possible across every assignment, regardless of category.
Dropped scores
Canvas lets instructors set a rule on an assignment group to automatically drop a student's lowest score (or scores) within that group before averaging it, under a setting called "Number of scores to ignore for each student." If your syllabus mentions your "lowest quiz is dropped," this is the mechanism, and it changes the average for that group before the weight gets applied. Instructors can also mark specific assignments as never eligible to be dropped, usually the final or a major project.
Semester GPA vs. cumulative GPA
These answer two different questions. Semester GPA is the average of just the courses you're taking in the current term, weighted by each course's credit hours. Cumulative GPA folds in every graded term you've completed, again weighted by credits. Canvas has no concept of either one, because it doesn't track your enrollment history or credit hours across terms; that lives in your school's student information system.
Turning a percentage into a GPA point value
Most U.S. schools use some version of the standard 4.0 scale, though exact cutoffs vary by institution, so always confirm against your registrar's official scale for anything that counts toward your record.
| Letter | Typical range | GPA points |
|---|---|---|
| A | 93-100% | 4.0 |
| A- | 90-92% | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87-89% | 3.3 |
| B | 83-86% | 3.0 |
| B- | 80-82% | 2.7 |
| C+ | 77-79% | 2.3 |
| C | 73-76% | 2.0 |
Once each course has a GPA point value, semester or cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of those points, not a simple average, since a 4-credit course should count more than a 1-credit one.
All of this assumes you can actually see the percentage you're working from. If a course has its total grade hidden by the instructor, you'll need to work from raw assignment scores instead; here's why that happens and how to get a real number anyway.
GPA Plus runs this exact calculation automatically from your real Canvas assignment data, including weighted groups and dropped scores, and rolls it into a semester and cumulative GPA. Free Chrome extension, no signup, nothing leaves your browser.
