What Grade Do You Need on the Final? How to Calculate It

The formula for working backward from a target grade

This is the same weighted-average math behind any Canvas grade calculation, just solved for a different unknown. Instead of "what's my current grade," the question is "what score do I need on the one piece that's left to hit a target." Here's the formula and a worked example.

The formula

You need three numbers: your current grade before the final, the final's weight as a share of the total course, and your target grade for the course.

This comes directly from the weighted-average formula, rearranged to isolate the one unknown: everything except the final is already fixed, so the final's contribution has to make up the entire gap between where you are and where you want to land.

Worked example

In this example, hitting a 90% overall isn't possible even with a perfect final, since the math comes out above 100%. That's a genuinely useful thing to know before the exam, not after: it tells you the realistic target is a lower grade, or that extra credit or a grade appeal is the only path to the original goal.

Reading the result

• If the needed score is above 100%, your target isn't reachable through the final alone.
• If it's negative or very low, you've already clinched that grade regardless of the final.
• Anywhere in between is a real, achievable number to study toward.
